Very well illustrated (in several different styles - different people?) video of spoken poetry by the same guy who's poem on Canada was, in my opinion, the best part of the Vancouver Olympics opening ceremonies. To This Day by Shane Koyczan: If you've never moved I don't know if you'll appreciate all the incredibly designed solutions these Japanese have come up with for moving. Brilliant. Especially the breakable dishes which are a pain to pack. Article here.
"We’ve featured some pretty bizarre advertising techniques here, on Oddity Central. We’ve had people renting out their last names to the highest bidder, tattooing brand names on their faces, and even using animals as living billboards, But so far, women’s legs have been off limits. Well, not anymore; Japanese PR company Absolute Territory PR has begun paying young women to wear advertising stickers on ... the part of their thighs between the edge of their miniskirts and their high socks. ...over 1,300 girls had applied for the agency’s service, and their number is growing fast. Girls interested in having their thighs registered with Absolute Territory must be at least 18 years old, and also have a social media account connected to at least 20 other people. After choosing a sticker ad, they have to wear it for at least eight hours a day, or more, for a set period of time, in order to meet the conditions of the contract and receive payment. ...to prove they are actively going out and promoting their thigh ads, girls have to post photos of themselves wearing the stickers on their Facebook, Twitter or other social media accounts. "Hey guys, just a reminder that your 5min movies are due this Friday. What? You're going to make a Harlem Shake video from scratch instead?" Reminds me of the craziness in dorms during the stress of university finals week. On a technical note, I'm surprised how nice the video lighting was from overhead fluorescents! Adobe is giving away their 7 year old Photoshop CS2 (actually, the whole suite). It's technically supposed to be for people who already have the program that want to access the files, because Adobe now regards it as too old to help you with. But if you are a high school student with no money to afford a $600 new program, then this is a better place to start than piracy! If you're interested in doing more with Photoshop, you could learn the program, get hooked on it, and then buy the newer version when you're older and can actually afford to. Found out about it here, or adobe site here.
You probably recognize this picture from one of the most watched youtube videos of 2012. This band did a cover of Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know" where all 5 musicians played on the same guitar. Very creative. Here if you never saw it. Below is a newer video, of a song they wrote themself. What's crazy is that they cut up the music and then filmed it out of sequence. There's a making of video here. The final product fast forwards and rewinds the video to match the normal song. Crazy! They are impressing me with their creativity, which is what will get your video passed around on youtube and make it famous. It's not about the technical aspects or the cool special effects - the first time is mind-blowing and famous, but after that "it's been done". But creativity costs nothing, creativity can adapt to any level of technology, that's what you want to train and develop in yourself. Speaking of great creative ideas, check out these band photos! The level of photoshop needed for this is not crazy, you could do this.
As an increasingly old man, I'm so glad this has died down. And get off my lawn. Did you ever think about the implications of a YOLO philosophy? These guys did. The Lonely Island is the group that makes the digital shorts that play on Saturday Night Live as it includes a few of the members. They like making ridiculous songs and then making videos with really high production value (lighting, HD, slow motion) - there's something funny about the juxtiposition of a silly song being treated very seriously. Warning if you check out their other videos: If you've seen them on Saturday Night Live you'll know some of their stuff is not G rated. I had to send a few students this Hallowe'en to the vice-principal for dressing up as one of their videos :) And then sometimes being obviously low budget is funny (Laser Cats). Whatever people aren't expecting.
The Superbowl often sets the record for the most watched television program of all time, so for commercial makers in the US, this is like the Olympics/Grand Championships. This is the time to watch the best commercials, all competing to make an impact on the millions of eyes watching it. I actually like this part better than the game. Just buying 1 commercial spot can be over $1 million dollars, so the companies are willing to spare no expense to make it worth it.
Think about your 60 sec. short films. What kind of commercial would you make when there is still only 60 seconds but no budget constraints? A simple search will let you find all of them, here are some of my favourites from this year, and previous years. Hyundai - Team Audi - Prom Tide - Montana Stain Oreo - Quiet Chaos Coca Cola - Security Cameras Milk - Morning Run Sketchers - Man vs. Cheetah Ram - God Made a Farmer (2012) Volkswagen - The Force (2011) Bridgestone - Reply All (2010) Old Spice - The Man Your Man Could Smell Like (2008) ETrade - Baby (2007) Reebok - Terry Tate (2006) Bud Light - The Magic Fridge (2006) Sprint - Crime Deterrent Phone (2003) FedEx - Desert Island Castaway (2001) Bud Light - Cedric Date (2000) Electronic Data Systems - Herding Cats |
