Video here. "Erik Johansson creates realistic photos of impossible scenes -- capturing ideas, not moments. In this witty how-to, the Photoshop wizard describes the principles he uses to make these fantastical scenarios come to life, while keeping them visually plausible."
The Capture Photography Festival is a month long celebration of photography and lens-based art every April in Vancouver, Canada." They've just put some of the artist's work up for sale, it's a neat chance to see what kind of photos are done by professional artists. It's a real variety. Link here though they only show part of the whole photo.
The City of Vancouver hired a graphic design firm to update their logo for $8000. The city's legion of graphic designers were so appalled, they wrote an open letter to the city about how terrible it was. The best part of it was that they pointed out AMAZING city logos that exist around the world, and I was blown away by how good a city logo can be. (seriously, scroll to the bottom of the open letter and read about some of the city logos! Great thoughtful design!) The top one is the new logo. Here's an article. There's also a link to how similar it is to Chilliwack's.
TED is a collection of probably the best short presentations on new ideas on the internet. This one will encourage you to go ahead and try and copy photos and films and yearbooks that you see. Learn how they're done, be inspired by them, and keep the best techniques and mash them up for yourself :) NASA has commissioned some fake Space Tourism posters, and the results are some fantastic graphic design. They call back to the tourism posters and magazine ads of decades ago. They are also offering large versions of them online for free downloading here.
I am blown away by creativity. When someone takes a photo of a part of the school I've never seen before, when they shoot a flower from an angle I've never thought of... anything I see that's original is impressive. I love it. The mind behind it - how does someone come up with something no one else has thought of yet? Creativity and freshness is highly valued in the business world as well. Design something new and people's attention is drawn to it. For example, Cirque de Soleil completely remade the tired trope of the Circus after... 100 years? This video has a performance with a fairly simple idea, but one I've never seen before. What a great idea. Why is everyone just using plain paint? This wife decorated her husband's car in sharpie.
