Video here. "Erik Johansson creates realistic photos of impossible scenes -- capturing ideas, not moments. In this witty how-to, the Photoshop wizard describes the principles he uses to make these fantastical scenarios come to life, while keeping them visually plausible."

Like looking at old films? The library has over 1 million, and are making many from the 20th century available online, including old black and white newsreels. See New York Times article detailing what's available here.
This guy made a compilation of all the stuff he's been in, working as a background extra in LA. For no reason except it's funny set to a very serious soundtrack :)
This video does a really neat job pointing out bad editing decisions, and shows how to fix it using 3 guidelines for how to have good editing cutting from one shot to another in a scene. Want to put in an establishing shot to set your student movie in New York City? Or Egypt? Or in space orbiting the earth? Want to show that it's the next day by showing the sun rising and setting? Can't afford a helicopter or drone footage for establishing shots? This looks amazing and not too hard to use. Google Earth website here. There is a really cool job out there, where all you do is make sound effects for films. Footsteps, doors creaking, punches, wind rustling through the trees. It's called "Foley". I was surprised to learn, in this interesting radio podcast from 99% Invisible, that nature documentaries require foley artists to substitute in the animal noises. There's actually quite an interesting and sometimes scandalous history of "faking" in order to show the "truth" that is difficult to record. Click here to listen to the episode and see some of the video the radio podcast talks about.
I loves me a good podcast. Behind the scenes video of one of the biggest, most epic TV productions, Game of Thrones. |
