Posted here on the Fraser Valley Regional Library's facebook page. They are also running a photo contest during March (see the Contests tab)
What effect does this have on (primarily women, though men to an increasing degree) to see an image of beauty on media everywhere (ads, magazines, videos, tv, etc) that is not just unattainable, but LITERALLY unrealistic and impossible to attain. Concerns about this has led to really neat revealing videos like the ones below. The first (Dove) was the first big commercial I saw that showed this. Up until then I had no idea. At first I thought it was rare. But now it's apparently expected and assumed that "just about every image of a person we see on TV or in the movies these days has been digitally retouched to some degree." (source) Fantasy Author Jim C. Hines writes this on his website: (which has more examples):
"In January of 2012, I decided that I wanted to talk about science fiction and fantasy cover art, particularly the ways women were portrayed. At first, I thought about writing a long blog post, talking about how saturated we were with imagery that emphasized women as sexual objects at the expense of power, agency, realism, and so on.Then I decided there might be a more effective way to encourage discussion. With assistance and surprisingly little eye-rolling or laughter from my wife, I contorted myself into the poses of women on various SF/F covers. Things snowballed from there. I did several follow-up photoshoots, ran a cover-posing fundraiser, and was even honored with a Hugo award that year."
"Though pricey, using Adobe software has some key benefits. The Adobe Creative Suite is the industry standard for graphic design at present and will remain dominant for the foreseeable future. As such, there are many more tutorials and guides available online for beginners. Open source software, though free, has a steeper learning curve and can be challenging for the inexperienced. For many, the established community of developers using Adobe software and the support system they provide is enough of a reason to choose Creative Suite tools." (last link below)
But what if you have no option ex. you're a high school student with no money and you want to put something on your home computer? These pages have some good suggestions: Build your own Adobe Creative Suite with free and cheap software 10 Free Open Source Alternatives to Adobe Creative Suite Free open source alternatives to Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator Take a historical photo, and a new photo, and superimpose them on top of each other. That's the essence of this new campaign by the History Channel to "Know Where you Stand". Realize that interesting things may have happened right where you're standing. Did you know that where you sit in Sands used to sit students who fell in love, got married to each other, and had kids, who now go to Sands with you? Crazy to think about, but definitely true. Maybe they're the one who graffitied that desk you're in. Photographer Seth Taras' website here.
"I started taking self portraits a little over a year ago. I was interested in photography but am terrible at talking with people, so I ended up using myself in nearly all of my photos. I started to spend several hours a day going alone through empty forests taking self portraits with my cameras timer.
"I've been trying to teach myself photoshop, but I really only know the basic tools. If I combine two images together I always take them in the same location, same time, same camera settings etc. About half of the images in here are composites of two images." Full Imgur album here where he explains some of them. My favourite's the balloons, which are not photoshopped, but he weighted down to the bottom of the river with metal washers. Adobe is giving away their 7 year old Photoshop CS2 (actually, the whole suite). It's technically supposed to be for people who already have the program that want to access the files, because Adobe now regards it as too old to help you with. But if you are a high school student with no money to afford a $600 new program, then this is a better place to start than piracy! If you're interested in doing more with Photoshop, you could learn the program, get hooked on it, and then buy the newer version when you're older and can actually afford to. Found out about it here, or adobe site here.
You probably recognize this picture from one of the most watched youtube videos of 2012. This band did a cover of Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know" where all 5 musicians played on the same guitar. Very creative. Here if you never saw it. Below is a newer video, of a song they wrote themself. What's crazy is that they cut up the music and then filmed it out of sequence. There's a making of video here. The final product fast forwards and rewinds the video to match the normal song. Crazy! They are impressing me with their creativity, which is what will get your video passed around on youtube and make it famous. It's not about the technical aspects or the cool special effects - the first time is mind-blowing and famous, but after that "it's been done". But creativity costs nothing, creativity can adapt to any level of technology, that's what you want to train and develop in yourself. Speaking of great creative ideas, check out these band photos! The level of photoshop needed for this is not crazy, you could do this.
