The big rectangle lights are called "softboxes", because they diffuse the light and make it "soft" so there's no hard lines between what's in shadow and what's lit up. They are also "cool" lights and "continuous lighting", because you can leave them on all the time and they stay cool because they use CFL lights. The top light, sometimes called a "hair light" because that position is used for highlighting the back of the hair in a portrait, is also a "hot" light, as Jeremiah will tell you. Because it's more of a spotlight, it makes the light "hard" so it produces dramatic light/dark contrasts. Comments are closed.
